Appeal to fear exercise #3

An advertisement that uses an appeal to fear that I thought was interesting would be the stop smoking ads, which are used extensively now to prevent people from smoking cigarettes.
This ad states that smoking kills so why bother starting. It also states that cigarettes cause strokes, very addictive, raises blood pressure, reduces stamina, and more. All of these things frighten people beyond repair. This is a good argument because it is the premises and conclusions are true. When you smoke cigarettes it can cause all these bad effects. Thinking about how it can kill you makes you not even want to start smoking or quit smoking.  This ad appeals to fear because it gives all these bad side effects of smoking, making it less desirable and puts a sense of fear to whoever uses it.  This appeals to others fear because no one wants to have any bad effects from smoking and wish not to die.

  1. This is a good advertisement that you chose. I agree with you that a good argument is behind this ad. Most ads, like the one that I chose, was bad because it didn’t lead people to fear because of the facts of the situation or anything like that. But this advertisement gave reasons as to why they would feel fear. I liked how your ad listed the different health problems that could develop due to smoking. If I were a smoker and I saw an add that clearly stated ‘smoking causes strokes, it is very addictive, it can raise your blood pressure, etc.’ I would be afraid. These are definite reasons that can very likely happen and will be far more difficult to handle than quitting smoking.

  2. Mine is very similar to your example. I chose the same type of advertisement. Your ad is a really good argument since it states what can happen when you smoke as your premises and leads to a conclusion which is also true. This ad also gives people a lot of reason why they would fear smoking and prevent from smoking because I'm pretty sure no one wants to experience none of this type of diseases that can lead to deat and suffer from it. To add more fear to this ad, my uncle died from having a lung cancer back in 2000 due to smoking.

  3. This advertisement directly confronts the audience with the idea of death and cigarettes. By placing the cigarettes where the bullets should be going, they are making the comparison that smoking is on par with in its result with a loaded gun--it kills. The advertisement is very simple and lays out the descriptions and cautionary consequences when one begins smoking. By inducing fear, it makes the audience avoid that object because of the concept it's being related to. I definitely agree that scares people to see that so blatantly, and see what could happen, which are such serious consequences. Great post! :)
